Overview
- A shallow magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck eastern Indonesia early on Saturday, producing strong shaking across East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara and parts of South Sulawesi and triggering many aftershocks.
- Local rescuers near the port city of Maumere reported finding about 20 dead with people trapped and injured, while the national disaster agency (BNPB) has confirmed one death, four injured and says it is still collecting data.
- Landslides and road washouts have blocked access to the hardest-hit Nagekeo area, forcing teams to attempt ferry approaches and slowing search, rescue and damage assessments for roughly 2,000 evacuees there.
