Powdered Milk Recall Widens U.S. Pullback of Chips, Mixes and Pizzas

Regulators expect more items to be added as companies trace seasonings made with a tainted California Dairies ingredient.

Overview

  • The recalls trace back to California Dairies’ April 20 withdrawal of powdered milk and buttermilk used in many seasoning blends.
  • Downstream actions now cover items from brands including Zapp’s and Dirty chips, Ghirardelli beverage mixes, Good & Gather and Southern Style Nuts trail mixes, Pork King Good pork rinds, Williams Sonoma and Fireworks popcorn seasonings, Giant Eagle pita chips, and frozen pizzas at Walmart and Aldi.
  • The FDA and USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service are coordinating tracebacks and say companies will keep adding products as ingredient reviews finish.
  • Officials report no confirmed illnesses tied to the recalled foods, yet they warn affected products may still be in home pantries, refrigerators or freezers.
  • Consumers should check lot codes, stop eating recalled items, return or discard them for refunds, and contact a clinician if symptoms such as diarrhea, fever or stomach cramps develop.
