Possible Tornado Struck Woodstock, Vermont

A Friday ground survey by the National Weather Service will decide whether radar-indicated rotation produced a tornado and how strong it was.

Overview

  • A line of severe storms moved through eastern Vermont on Thursday and dual radars showed a tight vortex near Woodstock around 2:40 p.m., a signature that can indicate tornadic rotation.
  • The National Weather Service dispatched a damage-survey team to Woodstock on Friday to inspect snapped and uprooted trees, map a damage path, and assign an official tornado confirmation and intensity if warranted.
  • On-scene crews and local NBC5 reporters documented concentrated damage along Route 4, including sheared and uprooted trees and some structural hits, and officials said thousands of customers lost power with no injuries reported so far.
  • NBC5 officials said they had 'confirmed' a tornado after consulting outside damage experts, but the National Weather Service remains the final authority and has not yet released an official finding.
  • The parent storm system also prompted low-level flood warnings in northern Vermont for rivers expected to reach minor flood stage in places such as Coventry and North Troy, and recovery work may be slowed by lingering breezy conditions.
