Portion of Thane House Collapses, Killing 12-Year-Old

Municipal teams are evacuating nearby homes to carry out structural assessments and clear debris after the sudden collapse.

Overview

  • A section of a gallery from a ground-plus-one-storey house at Madras Chawl in Azad Nagar, Brahmand, gave way at about 3:35 pm on Friday and fell onto an adjacent home where a family was sleeping.
  • Twelve-year-old Jaykumar Jaiswal was pulled from the rubble with fatal injuries and declared dead on arrival at Civil Hospital; his mother Urmila Jaiswal, 35, and brother Vinit Jaiswal, 9, suffered head injuries and are being treated at Titan Hospital in Manpada.
  • Rescue teams used two fire engines, a rescue vehicle, a disaster-management utility vehicle and an ambulance to reach the scene and senior Thane municipal officials monitored the operation.
  • As a precaution, officials have vacated three neighbouring houses and the Majiwada Ward Committee, Public Works Department and the Encroachment Department are carrying out structural assessments and clearance work at the site.
  • Local authorities say the building involved was roughly 25–30 years old; follow-up inspections and clearance operations will determine safety, possible temporary relocations and whether further action is needed for older housing in the area.
