Portal Bridge Cutover Curtails NJ Transit Service and Sends Midtown Direct Trains to Hoboken

Trains are sharing one track between Newark and Secaucus during the transfer to Amtrak’s new Portal North Bridge.

Overview

  • NJ Transit is running reduced schedules on nearly all lines through March 15 and is urging customers to work from home or travel outside peak hours.
  • Peak capacity has been cut from about 48 trains an hour to roughly 18 as traffic is funneled onto a single track, according to NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri.
  • Weekday Midtown Direct service on the Morristown, Gladstone and Montclair‑Boonton lines is diverted to Hoboken, with weekend Midtown Direct trains continuing to and from New York Penn Station.
  • Rail tickets are being cross‑honored on PATH between Hoboken and 33rd Street, on NY Waterway ferries between Hoboken Terminal and West 39th Street with extra boats at peaks, and on NJ Transit’s 126 bus to Port Authority.
  • Early days of the cutover included 27 cancellations Sunday, three Monday and five Tuesday, with NJ Transit citing engineer assignment issues and the union disputing how schedules were set.
