Pornhub Owner Begins Blocking Australians Ahead of New Age-Check Rules Taking Effect Monday

Australia’s online safety regulator warns it will enforce the new codes with fines of up to AU$49.5 million per breach starting Monday.

Overview

  • Aylo, which owns Pornhub, RedTube, YouPorn and Tube8, has restricted access for Australian users and stopped new registrations on several platforms, though Pornhub itself was not fully blocked at publication.
  • The enforceable industry codes require “accurate, robust, fair and reliable” age assurance for adult content, moving beyond simple self-declaration.
  • Approved verification options cited by regulators include facial age estimation, photo ID checks and digital identity wallets, subject to Australian privacy law.
  • The rules extend beyond porn sites to search engines, app stores, gaming providers and generative AI systems, with search engines required to blur explicit results by default for users not logged in.
  • Online games rated R18+ will require age checks for access, and Aylo argues the site-by-site model is ineffective and risks privacy, proposing verification at the Apple, Google or Microsoft platform level instead.
