Pontevedra Province Sidelines Vigo City Hall in Reconquista Push, Backing Organizers Directly

The provincial government’s plan to fund the neighborhood association that runs the festival resets who steers money and the bid for international tourist status.

Overview

  • The Diputación de Pontevedra, which on Wednesday rejected Vigo’s city hall as interlocutor, said it will negotiate and fund the Reconquista through the Casco Vello neighborhood association.
  • The vice president, Luisa Sánchez, outlined the path to international recognition, which needs a council vote, a favorable Xunta report, and a media plan the association has begun.
  • Abel Caballero a day earlier said he will send a funding agreement to the Xunta and the Diputación seeking matching support of more than €250,000 per edition and repayment of past shortfalls he estimates at €1.5 million.
  • The city council approved a unanimous motion urging the regional and provincial governments to match the municipal contribution to the festival.
  • Officials agree the event will seek international status only when requirements are met, even as Vigo cites this year’s surge in hotel stays and a reported 219% jump in Vitrasa bus trips to argue for stronger backing.
