PolitiFact Rates ‘Mass Amnesty’ Claim About House Dignity Act Half True

The immigration bill ties a fines-based legal status for longtime undocumented residents to tougher border and job checks.

Overview

  • PolitiFact, in a Monday ruling, said Rep. Brandon Gill’s “mass amnesty” charge is only half right because the bill limits who qualifies and adds fines and vetting.
  • The plan creates a seven-year “dignity status” for people here before Dec. 31, 2020 who pass background checks, work or study, and pay $7,000 plus back taxes, with no federal benefits or direct path to citizenship.
  • A separate Dreamer track would let some childhood arrivals gain legal status for up to 10 years and later apply for citizenship if they meet set rules, potentially covering as many as 2.5 million people.
  • The package also boosts enforcement with more border barriers and surveillance, mandatory E-Verify for employers, faster asylum decisions within 60 days, and tougher penalties for illegal reentry and noncitizen voting.
  • The proposal has 39 bipartisan House cosponsors as conservative critics, including Stephen Miller, argue it is amnesty and urge Republicans to block it.
