Polish Court Sentences Russian Activist to Seven Years for Spying for FSB

Poland says the verdict bolsters its case for tighter EU visa and Schengen controls on Russian nationals.

Overview

  • A district court in Sosnowiec sentenced Igor Rogov to seven years in prison and his wife, Irina Rogova, to three years on July 9, 2026 after finding them guilty of spying for Russia’s FSB.
  • Rogov admitted to investigators and court documents that he passed information to the FSB about Russia-based dissidents, Polish officials, university staff and groups helping exiles.
  • The court also convicted Rogov over a July 2024 operation in which a courier package carrying explosive components, including nitroglycerin, was intercepted before it reached its destination.
  • The trial began in January and was partly closed for national security reasons; the defendants had been granted refugee status in Poland, were arrested in 2024, and have said they cooperated under pressure and threats.
  • Polish officials say the verdict highlights Moscow’s reach into exile communities and are using it to press the European Commission for stricter Schengen and visa rules for Russian nationals.
