Police Were Limited in Probing Stronach Allegations, Lead Investigator Testifies

The prosecution has narrowed the Toronto case to seven counts after determining some allegations lack sufficient evidence to meet the burden of proof.

Overview

  • Under defence questioning, Peel Sgt. Gabe Di Nardo said the historical nature of the claims curtailed investigative options and that he generally believed complainants absent reasons to doubt them.
  • Prosecutors are now seeking convictions on seven of the original 12 charges after dropping five counts, including attempted rape, forcible confinement and several sexual-assault allegations.
  • The defence has begun its case, calling Stronach’s former driver, who testified the businessman owned only Cadillacs, contradicting a complainant’s description of a low-slung foreign sports car.
  • Stronach’s former assistant testified the waterfront condo did not have mirrors on the bedroom ceiling and was sparsely furnished, challenging details in a complainant’s account.
  • Court expects to complete evidence this week before legal arguments later in March, and the defence has signalled a potential stay application over alleged witness-preparation abuses.
