Police Watchdog Probes 11 Met Officers Over Wimbledon School Crash Inquiry

Prosecutors are still weighing new evidence from a reopened Met inquiry.

Overview

  • The IOPC, which disclosed the case Tuesday, is investigating 11 Met officers and has served four serving and one former officer with gross-misconduct notices and two constables with misconduct notices.
  • The watchdog is examining claims officers gave false or misleading information to families and whether race influenced how victims were treated.
  • The case stems from a July 2023 crash at The Study Preparatory School in Wimbledon that killed eight-year-olds Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau and injured others.
  • The Met reopened the case in October 2024 and sent a full evidence file to the CPS on March 17, and prosecutors told families they expect a charging decision by the end of April after taking counsel’s advice on April 7.
  • The families welcomed the IOPC probe as a step toward answers, and the Met said it supports independent scrutiny after referring the conduct issues to the watchdog.
