Police Video Shows Milwaukee Officer Cling to Tow Truck Before Fatal Shooting

West Allis Police are conducting the review.

Overview

  • Milwaukee police released body camera video of a pursuit and shooting that occurred March 12 on the city's south side.
  • The footage shows an officer hanging onto a flatbed tow truck for several blocks at about 30 mph while shouting commands and a warning to stop.
  • The officer then fired, the truck came to a halt, and the driver, 35-year-old Jonathan Otto, was later pronounced dead.
  • Officials say Otto was wanted on allegations of assault and strangulation, and his passenger told a local station he panicked because he did not want to return to jail.
  • The 46-year-old officer with 21 years on the force was treated for nonfatal injuries and placed on administrative leave, and West Allis Police now lead an outside investigation as officials have not confirmed local reports that radio traffic logged “21 shots fired.”
