Police Uncover €300 Million Fuel VAT Fraud and Clandestine Arms Workshop

Judicial controls now require passport surrender alongside monthly check-ins for key suspects.

Overview

  • UDEF and Spain’s Tax Agency carried out nine coordinated searches on December 2 targeting Biomar Oil’s network in Madrid and Ávila.
  • Investigators estimate the VAT shortfall at roughly €300 million across 2023–2024 in what police describe as one of the sector’s largest schemes.
  • Seizures included more than €130,000 in cash, 167 luxury watches, over €14 million in financial assets, accounts frozen above €12.5 million, 3.6 million liters of fuel, 60 high‑end vehicles and 46 properties.
  • A raid in Ávila found a clandestine workshop holding 44 firearms, war‑grade ammunition and an armored vehicle fitted with a heavy machine gun.
  • Eight people were arrested and about ten more placed under investigation on suspected tax, money‑laundering, organized‑crime and illicit‑weapons charges, with three detainees later freed under court‑ordered reporting and travel restrictions by Judge Antonio Piña.
