Police Treat Brighton Bin-Store Blaze as Deliberate

The blaze involved council bins near a private recycling site that briefly shut for safety.

Overview

  • Sussex Police say the Wilson Avenue fire is believed to have been started on purpose and they are investigating with East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.
  • Fire crews sent three engines to a council-run bin storage area in Whitehawk and put out flames that had spread across multiple wheelie bins.
  • Thick black smoke was visible across Brighton and Hove, and residents were told to keep windows and doors closed because burning plastic can give off toxic fumes.
  • Roads closed during the response, including Wilson Avenue and Warren Road, later reopened and no injuries were reported.
  • Veolia said its nearby recycling facility was not the source of the blaze, closed only on fire service advice, and has reopened, and police urged anyone with information to quote CAD 687 28/04 when getting in touch.
