Police Suspend Search for Missing NMU Student After Video Shows Him Walk Onto Harbor Ice

Investigators say new surveillance places Trenton Massey on the Founder's Landing pier before he disappears from camera view.

Overview

  • Marquette police reported that city cameras tracked the 21-year-old from the multiuse path near UPHS-Marquette around 2:50 a.m. to Founder's Landing, where he appeared to walk onto the ice at about 3:35 a.m. on Feb. 22.
  • Authorities said active search operations are suspended pending new information, though the investigation continues and volunteers were urged to respect private property and stay off the ice.
  • Earlier efforts involved multi-agency teams and hundreds of volunteers using sonar, an underwater vehicle, an airboat and a helicopter to probe the lower harbor near Founder's Landing.
  • Police previously described Massey as disoriented and unsteady in surveillance footage and asked residents and businesses to review recordings from around 3:25 a.m. Sunday and check properties and vehicles.
  • Massey’s mother, Sarah Brock, has shared his last messages and vowed to keep searching, while a fundraiser for the family surpassed $42,000 as of early Wednesday, according to Newsweek.
