Police Shoot 21-Year-Old Man Believed to Be Carrying Crossbow in Newport

An independent watchdog assessment will decide whether a full statutory probe is opened

Overview

  • Gwent Police shot a 21-year-old Newport man during a response to reports of threatening behaviour on St Edward Street on Friday night.
  • Firearms officers say the man was seen with a weapon believed to be a crossbow and was shot with a police-issued firearm before receiving first aid and being taken to hospital in a stable condition.
  • Deputy Chief Constable Nicholas McLain said the force treats the incident as isolated and that officers are not seeking anyone else in connection with it.
  • Gwent Police have contacted the Independent Office for Police Conduct and an IOPC assessment is under way to decide if a statutory investigation is needed, which is the normal oversight step after officer-involved shootings.
  • Police have asked the public for CCTV or dashcam footage to help enquiries and neighbours described a tense scene with officers talking to the armed man before he was shot and medics performing CPR at the scene.
