Overview
- Bedfordshire Police published CCTV from September 6 showing 31-year-old Liam Moriarty headbutting Special Constable Jack Capener at Bedford Hospital, leaving both unconscious.
- Capener suffered a broken nose that required stitches and he was unable to return to duty for almost two months.
- Moriarty had been arrested after a car collision in Shefford and, during treatment, he spat at another officer and caused more than £5,000 of damage to hospital equipment.
- At Luton Crown Court on February 27, Moriarty admitted grievous bodily harm, assault on an emergency worker, and criminal damage, receiving a 2.5-year sentence with six months on remand credited; two further charges were left on file.
- Police leaders condemned the attack, reported roughly 30 assaults on officers each month, and highlighted the Maggie’s Law welfare support program.
