Police Recover Parachute Device in Rochdale Plane Crash as Second Victim Is Identified

AAIB investigators alongside Greater Manchester Police continue to examine evidence after a Cirrus SR20 from Birmingham crashed near Littleborough.

  • The missing 30cm parachute component containing propellant was found on Saturday, 7 February by a member of the public and safely retrieved, Greater Manchester Police said.
  • Victims were named as pilot Arian Abbasi, 36, from Harrow, and Mustafa Qays Obadey, 39, from Greenford, with families paying tribute through police statements.
  • Photos showed a parachute caught on a nearby pylon, and its deployment forms part of the ongoing investigation.
  • The aircraft, a Cirrus SR20 registered G-GXVV, departed Birmingham Airport’s XLR Executive Jet Centre around 10am on 3 February, with its last signal about 40 minutes later near Marsden, West Yorkshire.
  • Opening inquests are listed for 17 February at Rochdale Coroner’s Court, and police continue to seek witnesses quoting log 1056 of 03/02/26.
