Police Probe Death of Newborn After Unexpected Home Birth in Málaga

The national homicide unit is awaiting an autopsy to establish whether the baby was born dead or died during delivery.

Overview

  • Emergency services responded to an unexpected home labour on Calle Pelayo in Málaga and the mother and newborn were taken to the Hospital Materno Infantil after the baby was found lifeless on Sunday, July 5, 2026.
  • The Policía Nacional’s Grupo de Homicidios has opened an active investigation and is collecting evidence while awaiting autopsy results from the Instituto de Medicina Legal to determine time and cause of death.
  • Medical teams and a judicial delegation attended the scene, and the newborn’s body was transferred to the forensic institute for examination; the mother, 43, remains admitted to the Materno Infantil hospital.
  • Investigators are examining whether this was a case of involuntary denial of pregnancy because the woman reportedly did not recognise typical pregnancy signs and had prior medical visits in which no pregnancy was detected.
  • If the autopsy shows the baby died during birth rather than being stillborn, the criminal inquiry could continue; if it shows a stillbirth, the probe may shift focus to medical records and whether diagnostic gaps occurred.
