Police Probe Death After Colonoscopy in Rondônia Expands to Second Reported Case

Investigators are assessing whether medical error occurred at the same private clinic named by both families.

Overview

  • Thyago da Silva Severino, 34, died on Feb. 28 after his family reported an intestinal perforation during a colonoscopy at a private clinic in Cerejeiras.
  • He was taken to Hospital São Lucas, transferred to the Regional Hospital in Vilhena, underwent surgery, was admitted to the ICU, and died the next morning.
  • The Polícia Civil confirmed on Mar. 6 that it opened an investigation into Thyago’s death following a complaint filed by his family.
  • On Mar. 7, a second family reported a similar case involving the same clinic and doctor; they say Alzery Geraldo suffered a perforation after exams, required emergency surgery, remained in a coma, and died on Sept. 30.
  • The clinic and physician have not responded to media inquiries, the regional medical council acknowledged the case with any inquiry kept confidential, and Thyago’s relatives say they seek clarification and accountability only if negligence is proven.
