Police Operation in Cidade de Deus Continues as Criminals Burn Barricades and Use Buses to Block Roads

The escalation has disrupted multiple bus routes, forced detours and suspended some clinic services, raising the risk of wider public disruption.

Overview

  • Police mounted a multi-day operation led by the 18º BPM with tactical support from GAT/9º BPM and the 41º BPM to remove barricades and disrupt drug trafficking and vehicle theft.
  • On Thursday the operation resulted in four arrests and the seizure of a 9 mm pistol, drugs and a stolen motorcycle, with suspects and evidence sent to the local police station.
  • On Friday criminal groups intensified resistance by setting fires, placing barricades and commandeering buses to block streets, causing two buses to be used as obstacles and forcing detours.
  • Ten bus lines that serve the area were reported as affected, the Estrada Marechal Miguel Salazar was temporarily closed and several local health units delayed or limited services because of the operation.
  • The operation remains ongoing and authorities say they aim to clear barricades and restore order; residents should expect continued transport disruptions and further police activity while forces work to reestablish normal services.
