Police Open Dozens of Investigations After AfD Congress in Erfurt

The scale of criminal and administrative probes could increase scrutiny of the AfD under the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

Overview

  • Following the AfD federal congress held the first weekend of July, Thüringer Polizei is processing 74 criminal offences and 13 administrative violations with investigations open against 35 people.
  • Police said about 31,000 people demonstrated in Erfurt and that the large majority of protests were peaceful while isolated violent incidents occurred.
  • Three reporters from the right‑conservative portal Apollo News were physically attacked and investigators are examining two unknown suspects and one previously known person for insult and dangerous bodily harm.
  • A representative of the newspaper Junge Freiheit was robbed during the demonstrations and police are investigating three suspects with one person already identified.
  • The AfD’s classification as a Verdachtsfall by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution framed the heavy police deployment in Erfurt and means these probes could influence future monitoring of the party and security plans for public demonstrations.
