Police Find 40 Dead Animals in Winschoten Barn

Survivors are under veterinary care during an NVWA investigation that follows the detention of a 21-year-old from Eemsdelta.

Overview

  • Police and the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) inspected a barn after an anonymous tip and found forty dead animals, including sheep, lambs and a calf, on Friday.
  • Officers also found about 160 live animals kept in very poor conditions with little daylight and insufficient food and water, and some were walking among carcasses.
  • The roughly 160 surviving animals were immediately relocated and are being examined and treated by a veterinarian at receiving facilities.
  • A 21-year-old man from the municipality of Eemsdelta has been detained as a suspect and will be questioned later as the criminal inquiry continues.
  • The NVWA is continuing administrative and investigative follow-up and veterinary tests will determine causes of death and the next legal or animal-welfare actions to watch for.
