Police Detain About 100 After RemoVasco Fan Clash in Belém

Authorities signaled tougher use of Brazil’s fan statute following the street violence.

Overview

  • Military Police broke up a large fight between organized supporters of Remo and Vasco near the Mangueirão stadium and took about 100 people to the Benguí precinct.
  • The Civil Police later said they charged 75 adults under the Fan Statute and referred 45 adolescents to the juvenile unit in Belém.
  • The confrontation unfolded on Avenida Almirante Barroso between the Chaco and Curuzu cross streets, where people ran through traffic and scared drivers and pedestrians.
  • Officers used rubber bullets to disperse the crowds and also stopped buses that were transporting supporters.
  • Local rivalries and alliances among organized fan groups in Belém, including ties between Vasco’s Força Jovem and Paysandu’s TUTB and split factions within Remo, have added strain when visiting clubs come to the city.
