Police Confirm Death After Pontrilas Rail Incident That Shut Newport–Hereford Route

British Transport Police say the fatality near Pontrilas is not being treated as suspicious.

  • Officers were called just after 4:15pm on October 28 to reports of a casualty on the tracks near Pontrilas, where a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Police said the circumstances are not thought to be suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
  • All lines between Newport and Hereford were closed as emergency services responded, with National Rail warning of cancellations, revisions and delays through the end of the day.
  • Transport for Wales arranged replacement buses at Newport, Hereford and Shrewsbury, and tickets were accepted on selected Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, Great Western Railway, Northern and West Midlands Railway services.
  • National Rail advised that tickets dated October 28 could be used the following day at no extra cost and directed affected passengers to compensation procedures.
