Police Chief Masemola Charged Over R360 Million SAPS Tender, Joins Matlala Case in May

The joint case could force decisions about leadership at the top of the police.

Overview

  • Masemola, who appeared Tuesday in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, was added to the Vusi “Cat” Matlala matter and the combined case was postponed to 13 May.
  • He faces four counts under the Public Finance Management Act tied to the Medicare24 health-services contract worth R360 million, with prosecutors noting the counts are not Schedule 5 offences and that he was summoned rather than arrested.
  • State prosecutor Santhos Manilal said the probe is advanced but still awaits financial records such as bank statements, while the NPA said it would not proceed without strong grounds.
  • Masemola told reporters he has done nothing wrong and will cooperate, and SAPS spokesperson Athlenda Mathe called the moment a test of accountability as the service works to rebuild public trust.
  • The DA urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to suspend Masemola and convene a Section 9 inquiry, and the Madlanga Commission continued hearing evidence of tender manipulation involving Tshwane officials.
