Overview
- Police were called Tuesday afternoon after reports of a body in a Haigh pond, in what officers believe is the discovery of missing 71-year-old Dwayne Akkermans.
- Formal identification has not taken place, and his family have been told and are being supported by officers.
- Akkermans was last seen on April 17 in the Ratcliffe Road area of Aspull near Wigan after a public appeal sought help to find him.
- Lancashire and Chorley officers reviewed CCTV, carried out house-to-house checks, and focused searches in Aspull and around Hill Top Lane in Whittle-le-Woods.
- Greater Manchester Police are now leading the investigation into the death following the shift from a missing-person search to a formal inquiry.
