Police Arrest Alleged Main Shooter in Panjab University Firing After Gunfight

Police now probe alleged Bambiha orders behind the attack to trace the wider plot.

Overview

  • The suspect, Jaspreet Singh — also known as Jas or Jass Panaich — was intercepted Thursday on the Amloh-Patran road in Fatehgarh Sahib, opened fire on police, was injured in return fire, and was taken to a hospital before being arrested.
  • A joint team from Punjab’s Anti-Gangster Task Force, the Chandigarh District Crime Cell, and Fatehgarh Sahib Police led the operation, with officers saying they had tracked leads across Chandigarh and nearby districts since the campus shooting.
  • Investigators recovered a .32-bore country-made pistol, magazines, two live rounds, four spent shells, and a Hyundai Creta from the accused, and they booked him under firearms and gangster-related laws.
  • Police say he is a key member of the Doni Bal/Bambiha gang, and early findings suggest the attack was carried out on the network’s orders as teams work to identify accomplices and the source of the weapon.
  • The March 17 attack targeted SOPU student leader Jashanpreet Singh Jawanda during a campus festival, with four men on a stolen scooter reportedly firing two shots, which has renewed worries about gang influence in student politics at Panjab University.
