Polícia Federal Opens Operação Miragem and Blocks R$670.3 Million Tied to Banco Digimais

Judicial measures target alleged accounting schemes that investigators say inflated the bank’s balance sheet and could create losses for investors and the deposit insurance fund

Overview

  • The federal operation carried out on Tuesday, June 23 executed nine search warrants in São Paulo, won court approval to break banking and fiscal secrecy and ordered seizure or blocking of about R$670.3 million.
  • Investigators, using Banco Central supervision reports, say Digimais revalued assets and recognized artificial revenue with examples including a R$31 million asset marked up to R$230 million and R$71 million of fund quotas recorded as R$741.35 million.
  • Measures focus on senior executives, related companies and investment funds linked to the bank while owner Edir Macedo is subject to fiscal and patrimonial measures but was not physically searched because he lives abroad.
  • Banco Digimais has denied the allegations, said it will cooperate with authorities and reiterated compliance, but the probe has effectively jeopardized takeover talks with buyers such as BTG Pactual.
  • The PF notes that Digimais grew CDB issuance more than 1,100% to about R$8.5 billion and offered yields above 110% of the market reference rate, raising concern about exposure for investors outside the R$250,000 FGC guarantee and prompting possible further action from regulators.
