Pocket Fire Near Sedona Reaches 27,440 Acres as Containment Climbs to 53%

Crews are reinforcing control lines, ordering extra aircraft and focusing patrols to protect nearby communities, roads and air quality.

Overview

  • The wildfire has grown to about 27,440 acres with containment reported at 53% and hundreds of firefighters and aircraft continuing suppression work.
  • The fire began on June 19 about seven miles north of Sedona and moved through steep, inaccessible canyon terrain toward Oak Creek Canyon and nearby neighborhoods.
  • Incident commanders have increased resources to roughly 1,296 personnel and are using dozers, hand crews, helicopters and retardant drops to build and verify hardened control lines.
  • Local authorities have placed Seven Canyons and Enchantment in SET pre-evacuation status, closed sections of State Route 89A, restricted parts of Coconino National Forest, and kept a Temporary Flight Restriction in effect.
  • Cause remains undetermined and officials say verified line checks and near-term weather — especially gusty winds and low humidity — will determine whether containment holds and when closures and restrictions can be eased.
