PlayStation Halts PC Ports for First-Party Single-Player Games

The reported pivot reflects a push to protect the value of buying a PlayStation console.

Overview

  • PlayStation Studios chief Hermen Hulst told staff Monday that narrative single-player games from first-party teams will stay on PlayStation consoles only, according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier.
  • Online and multiplayer projects will still reach PC, with examples including Bungie’s Marathon and Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls that benefit from larger cross-platform player bases.
  • Plans to bring recent single-player titles such as Ghost of Yōtei and Saros to PC were canceled in recent weeks, and reports indicate future releases like Marvel’s Wolverine are now planned as PS5-only.
  • Outlets attribute the shift to weaker PC sales for later ports, fears that PC releases dilute the PlayStation brand and hardware demand, and uneven port timing and quality that hurt momentum.
  • Sony has not publicly confirmed the policy, and reporting notes possible exceptions for certain publishing arrangements such as Kena: Scars of Kosmora on Steam and the Epic Games Store.
