Play Suspended at Memorial Tournament After Lightning Risk

Play was halted for player and spectator safety as officials evaluate radar and forecasts to decide whether an early-afternoon restart is possible.

Overview

  • Tournament officials suspended the third round at Muirfield Village at 11:16 a.m. on Saturday after lightning and an approaching storm front prompted a safety stoppage.
  • J.T. Poston led at 9-under and Ryan Gerard was one shot behind but neither had teed off because their group was scheduled for a 1:40 p.m. start when play was halted.
  • The PGA Tour forecast showed a possible improvement window beginning around 1 p.m. with rain chances dropping to about 30% then and to roughly 10% by 3 p.m., leaving open the chance play could resume later in the afternoon.
  • Officials also warned of additional thunderstorm development after 5 p.m. and possible severe weather, which could prevent finishing the round today and will shape tee-time decisions and broadcast plans.
  • The Tour uses a five-stage color-coded weather alert system and has directed fans to seek shelter and avoid hilltops, trees, carts, and temporary structures while tournament staff monitor radar and update timing.
