Piura Blackout Triggers Citywide Disruptions as Losses Top S/9 Million

Oversight agencies have opened inquiries as merchants pursue compensation for spoiled goods.

Overview

  • A planned 3:00–6:30 a.m. shutdown by Enosa on Feb. 15 stretched into a 36–40+ hour outage across parts of Piura and Veintiséis de Octubre, with service only partially restored.
  • Pumping stations halted left neighborhoods such as Santa Rosa, Santa Julia, Rinconada and Pachitea without potable water for more than a day, while health facilities and at least 12 intersections lost critical functions.
  • The Chamber of Commerce estimates about S/9 million in economic damage and notes that affected businesses can seek compensation from the power company.
  • Market vendors, especially in the meat sector, report widespread spoilage with typical per-stand losses of S/2,000–S/4,000, and have filed complaints demanding indemnification from Enosa.
  • At least five Konecta call-center workers collapsed with heat-related symptoms, prompting a temporary closure by labor and public authorities, as a Senamhi red alert warns of heavy rains and flooding through Feb. 19.
