Pittsburgh CLO and Pittsburgh Public Theater Approve Merger, Plan Unified 2027 Launch

Dr. Brett Ashley Crawford, a Carnegie Mellon arts management professor, will steer a rapid transition toward a combined season beginning in January 2027.

Overview

  • The boards of both companies voted to form a single organization after more than a year of analysis and discussions.
  • An interim board is in place and initial funding has been secured to support the first phase of the transition.
  • Near-term work includes establishing the new legal and leadership structure, a real estate and venue plan, naming and branding, an executive search, and systems integration.
  • Programming for 2026 will proceed as planned, with CLO’s summer musicals and Pittsburgh Public Theater’s current season continuing until the joint season begins.
  • City Theatre Company participated in early talks but declined to join, and the merged entity plans to announce its inaugural programming by early fall 2026 as part of efforts to strengthen the Cultural District.
