Police have secured one dog, identified the owner, issued a public safety alert about the remaining animal, and referred the case to Merri-Bek Council for investigation.

Overview

  • Two pit bulls ran across Landells Road into Raeburn Reserve and attacked a family’s small dog, which was killed during the incident.
  • CCTV from a nearby home and eyewitnesses recorded the attack and showed bystanders rushing to intervene.
  • A man who tried to stop the assault suffered bite injuries and received medical treatment while the woman, toddler and the family’s other dog were not physically harmed.
  • Victoria Police located one pit bull which an animal ranger secured and seized, while the second dog remains missing and residents have been told not to approach it and to call triple zero if they see it.
  • Merri-Bek Council will investigate the circumstances of the attack and the police identification of the dogs’ owner could inform any further animal-control or legal action.
