Pirovano Takes Downhill Lead With Second Straight 0.01-Second Win in Val di Fassa

The Italian’s home-snow sweep vaults her to the top of the downhill race with one event left.

Overview

  • Laura Pirovano won Saturday’s Val di Fassa downhill by 0.01 seconds, following Friday’s identical-margin victory for a back-to-back sweep.
  • The two wins moved Pirovano into the downhill standings lead, 36 points ahead of injured Lindsey Vonn, who has been sidelined since her Olympic crash.
  • On Saturday, Cornelia Huetter was second and Corinne Suter third, pushing Olympic champion Breezy Johnson to fourth after her podium on Friday.
  • Friday’s race was Pirovano’s first World Cup podium and win, taken over Emma Aicher by 0.01, as Aicher’s 80 points then had tightened both the downhill and overall points races.
  • Aicher finished outside the top 10 on Saturday, softening Friday’s gains, while Mikaela Shiffrin still holds an overall lead of more than 115 points before Sunday’s super-G and the final downhill at Kvitfjell on March 21.
