Pirates Keep Konnor Griffin Out as Throwing Progression Is Delayed

Doctors say his throwing ligament is stable, prompting the club to hold off on a formal throwing program and use a pitcher-style rehab before clearance.

Overview

  • The Pirates placed Griffin on the 10-day injured list for a right forearm/flexor strain on May 31 and he is expected to remain on the IL beyond the minimum while doctors monitor his recovery.
  • Team physicians and an outside specialist examined imaging and clinical tests and concluded Griffin’s UCL/ligament is stable, so surgery is not currently being considered.
  • After a June second-opinion with Dr. Keith Meister, medical staff advised delaying throwing activity and recommended roughly a two-week pause before starting programmed throws.
  • Griffin has begun limited work such as plyometric ball drills, ground balls and hitting but has not been cleared to begin a formal, progressive throwing regimen by team doctors.
  • The cautious approach affects roster plans and the club’s short-term lineup because Griffin is a 20-year-old rookie hitting .270 with four homers and signed to a nine-year, $140 million extension.
