Pioneer Fire Forward Progress Stopped Near Tonto Basin

Halted growth at roughly 25 acres means ongoing air and ground suppression will decide if nearby residents need to evacuate.

Overview

  • Forestry officials said crews stopped the Pioneer Fire’s forward progress after it grew to about 25 acres in the Tonto National Forest roughly four miles south of Jake’s Corner.
  • The blaze was first reported at a smaller size and increased from an initial estimate of about 15 acres before firefighters halted its spread.
  • Two air tankers, a helicopter, firetrucks and ground crews remain on scene continuing suppression and monitoring to prevent renewed growth.
  • State Route 188 is closed in both directions near milepost 270 and drivers are urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
  • Gila County placed residents of Brownsville Mobile Home Park on “SET” status, telling them to prepare emergency kits and be ready to evacuate if conditions change.
