Pine Labs Launches P3P to Let AI Agents Execute UPI Payments

The protocol lets consumers pre-authorise capped UPI spending so verified AI agents can pay without per-transaction human authentication.

Overview

  • Pine Labs announced P3P on June 11 as a payments protocol that enables authorised AI agents to complete UPI transactions after a single upfront consumer approval.
  • P3P extends existing UPI mandate features, including One-Time Mandates and Single Block Multiple Debit (SBMD), to let apps lock a spending limit that agents can draw on later.
  • Technically, the system pairs Pine Labs’ payment and settlement rails with Grantex for delegated authorisation and identity checks and uses HTTP 402 for machine-readable payment requests and audit records.
  • The protocol is already live in production with digital‑gold platform Gullak, Vijay Sales is running a proof of concept, and Pine Labs says additional retail, fintech and travel deployments are underway.
  • Pine Labs emphasizes consumer controls such as agent verification, spending limits and the ability to revoke mandates, but independent audits and formal regulatory guidance for agent-driven UPI payments have not been reported.
