Pilot Reports Wingsuit Figure Crossing Above Jet Approaching LAX

The sighting prompted an FAA investigation after the county sheriff’s air unit searched the reported area and found no one.

Overview

  • A military Gulfstream crew told LAX air traffic control on Sunday that a person in a wingsuit or a possible skydiver crossed above their plane at about 4,000 feet while the flight was on final approach.
  • SoCal TRACON alerted nearby flights and controllers warned an American Airlines crew to be on the lookout before other pilots began scanning the sky.
  • The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Air Bureau launched a helicopter to search the area west of the 605 Freeway and north of the 105 Freeway but deputies were unable to locate anyone.
  • The flight that reported the sighting had flown from Joint Base Andrews to Nellis Air Force Base earlier that day and reported the observation within roughly ten minutes of landing at LAX.
  • The incident revived comparisons to the unresolved 2020 “Jetpack Man” episodes that investigators later said may have involved drones with mannequins, and the FAA is now probing the June 15 report with no public conclusion yet.
