Photo Shows Missing General Carrying Package Day Before He Vanished

The newly released image could help trace his last movements and raises questions about his military affiliations, recent health complaints, and what was inside the parcel.

Overview

  • Retired Major General William Neil McCasland was reported missing after he left his Albuquerque home on February 27 without his phone, wallet, wearable devices or prescription glasses and has not been seen since.
  • On June 12 the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office released a FOIA-obtained surveillance photo showing McCasland leaving a local sporting goods store with a large white shipping bag the day before he vanished.
  • Police bodycam recordings released in May captured an unidentified witness saying she dined with McCasland and members of the U.S. Space Force the night before his disappearance and described him as having high security clearance.
  • Family statements to police say McCasland had recent cognitive symptoms, was prescribed a new medication hours before he left, and departed wearing boots and carrying a .38-caliber revolver while leaving most of his clothes behind.
  • The case remains open with a Silver Alert active, and investigators say the photo and prior bodycam material add detail to his final movements but have not answered why he left or what happened next, drawing public attention because of his ties to military research and classified programs.
