PhonePe Launches Conversational Payments With Microsoft-Built AI Across India

PhonePe says a hybrid on-device–cloud design keeps personal data within its own systems.

Overview

  • PhonePe rolled out AI-driven voice and text commands that let users navigate the app, make payments, check balances and manage transactions using natural language.
  • The new experience is built with Microsoft technologies, with reports citing Microsoft Foundry and Azure OpenAI Service as the underpinning platforms.
  • The interface replaces menu-driven flows with intent-based routing, exemplified by prompts like “Pay Hemanth 20 rupees,” “Recharge FASTag” or “gold price.”
  • PhonePe says the system uses on-device and cloud inferencing while ensuring no personal or transactional data leaves the PhonePe environment on secure, compliant infrastructure.
  • The features are being introduced in phases across Android and iOS in India, with access points including the app’s Global Search Bar, Help Center and History tab, and leadership framing the move as a shift to more user-centric payments.
