Phoenix Shuts Popular Mountain Trails During Extreme Heat Warning

Forecast highs near 108 degrees prompted daytime closures to protect hikers.

Overview

  • The closures, which run 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Tuesday, remain in place under the National Weather Service warning.
  • Restrictions cover Camelback’s Echo Canyon and Cholla, the Piestewa Peak Summit Trail, and South Mountain routes including Holbert, Mormon, Hau'Pal Loop, and National Trail access from Pima Canyon.
  • Following Saturday's triple-digit heat, crews used a large rescue wheel to carry an overheated woman down from Echo Canyon at Camelback Mountain.
  • About an hour later Saturday, Phoenix Fire and Tempe firefighters called in the Firebird 10 helicopter to evacuate a man who fell ill higher on the same trail.
  • The city launched a Trail Heat Safety Program in 2021 after reporting more than 200 hiker rescues a year, and officials urge people to hydrate and wear lightweight clothing during this heat.
