Phoenix Officers Fatally Shoot Man After Hourlong Standoff at West Phoenix Apartment

The Arizona Department of Public Safety has opened the independent inquiry that follows any Phoenix fatal shooting.

Overview

  • Officers responded around 6 a.m. to a domestic disturbance near 43rd Avenue, found a woman and her young daughter locked behind a patio gate, and pried it open to free them.
  • Police say the man cocked a gun, fired several rounds from apartment windows, and shot down a drone that had been deployed to observe the door.
  • Officers returned fire during an hour-plus barricade, SWAT sent in a second drone, and the man was found inside and later pronounced dead at the scene.
  • No other injuries were reported, the man was not immediately identified, and police have not said how many officers fired or how many rounds were used.
  • Phoenix police spokesperson Sgt. Lorraine Fernandez provided the initial briefing, and azcentral reports it is the 14th fatal police shooting in Arizona this year, including four involving Phoenix officers.
