Philadelphia Starts Issuing Speed-Camera Fines in Five School Zones

The move targets school areas with a record of crashes to slow drivers during drop-off and pick-up hours.

Overview

  • The Philadelphia Parking Authority, which ended a 60-day warning phase Monday, has begun mailing tickets to drivers who speed in five school zones.
  • Cameras only trigger during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal when the yellow flashers are on, and they stay off on school breaks and holidays.
  • Drivers going 11–19 mph over get $100 fines, 20–29 mph over get $125, and 30 mph or more get $150, and none of the citations add license points.
  • The zones cover Stetson Middle, KIPP North Philadelphia, High School of the Future, Widener Memorial, and Sayre High, which were chosen after dozens of crashes since 2019.
  • Officials cite gains on Roosevelt Boulevard and Broad Street as proof the approach works, and a Frankford Avenue corridor stays in a warning period through June 12.
