Philadelphia Marks Juneteenth With Germantown Festival and West Philly Parade

City events mixed historical reflection, vendor marketplaces, performances, plus planned street closures and transit detours.

Overview

  • Over the June 20–21 weekend, the Johnson House Historic Site held its long-running Juneteenth festival on Germantown Avenue while the city staged its annual parade and festival in West Philadelphia.
  • The Johnson House event, now in its 20th year, drew thousands of visitors and featured more than 80 vendors, a main performance stage and family-focused programming on the 6300 block of Germantown Avenue.
  • Hundreds attended the West Philadelphia parade that began near 52nd and Parkside and ended at Malcolm X Park, with Mayor Cherelle Parker helping lead the march and DJ Jazzy Jeff serving as grand marshal.
  • Festival programming emphasized live music, spoken word, wellness and healing activities and a marketplace for Black- and brown-owned small businesses, including booths that offered mental-health exercises for children.
  • City operations for the events included multiple street closures, temporary no-parking zones and SEPTA bus detours for routes 40 and 52, changes that altered neighborhood traffic and transit service during the celebrations.
