Philadelphia Closes Roads as Buildout Begins for Lemon Hill FIFA Fan Festival

Officials say the measures aim to steer crowds toward transit, protecting nearby neighborhoods.

Overview

  • Road closures and site buildout at Lemon Hill, which began Tuesday, May 26, have started as crews assemble stages, fencing and infrastructure for the 39-day fan festival.
  • There will be no designated on-site parking and residential streets near the site will require free temporary permits from June 11 through July 19 to preserve local access.
  • The Philadelphia Parking Authority has increased patrols and put tow trucks on standby to enforce the new restrictions and keep restricted roads clear.
  • The city is subsidizing transit to cut car trips, including roughly $450,000 for Philly Phlash service, added SEPTA bus service and expanded Indego bike parking to move fans to and from the site.
  • Organizers will use a geofence to limit ride-hail access with designated pickup zones and mobility exceptions, require free online registration, enforce prohibited-item rules, and face resident concerns about communication, parking rollout and lasting park impacts.
