PGIMER Trial Shows Lipid Emulsion Cuts Deaths in Celphos Poisoning

The fat-based infusion offers a low-cost option already stocked in many Indian hospitals.

Overview

  • PGIMER’s randomized clinical study found that adding intravenous lipid emulsion to standard care reduced mortality in aluminium phosphide poisoning.
  • Patients who received the therapy showed faster correction of severe metabolic acidosis and improved hemodynamic stability, including in cases with shock and cardiac complications.
  • Researchers reported that early administration of the infusion can significantly change the clinical course of this poisoning.
  • The trial was led by Dr Mandip Singh Bhatia with co-investigator Dr Saurabh Chandrabhan Sharda under the guidance of Dr Sanjay Jain and was funded by PGIMER’s Medical Education and Research Cell.
  • The findings were published in the European Review of Medical and Pharmacological Sciences and target a pressing public-health burden in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
