PG&E Warns Likely Power Shutoffs in Eight Northern California Counties

A National Weather Service red flag warning for gusty northeast winds with low humidity has led PG&E to prepare preemptive outages to reduce wildfire risk.

Overview

  • PG&E warned Monday that it may cut power to parts of Colusa, Glenn, Lake, Napa, Sonoma, Sutter, Tehama and Yolo counties in a possible June 10–12 window to lower the chance its equipment could spark fires.
  • The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning from 11 a.m. Wednesday through 5 p.m. Thursday and forecasters expect north-northeast winds of 15 to 25 mph with 30 to 45 mph gusts and peaks of 50 to 60 mph on North Bay ridges.
  • The utility said it will post detailed maps and the exact list of affected addresses roughly two days before any shutoff, so many customers will learn whether they are impacted only shortly before outages begin.
  • Forecasters expect unusually warm overnight temperatures that could keep some areas above 70 degrees, increasing health risks for older adults and people who rely on electricity for medical devices and cooling.
  • Public safety power shutoffs are a routine wildfire-mitigation step PG&E has used recently, including in mid-May, and any outages could prompt local agencies to open cooling centers and issue preparedness guidance.
