PG&E Restores Power After First Planned S.F. Outage, Schedules Second Tonight

The tests aim to return the fire-damaged Mission substation to normal operations, enabling removal of temporary generators.

Overview

  • About 3,600 customers in the Civic Center had service back by roughly 8 a.m. Monday after the overnight cut, and Muni Metro fully resumed late morning following safety checks.
  • The next planned shutoff is set shortly after midnight Tuesday for Richmond and Sunset neighborhoods, affecting about 14,000 customers for up to two hours.
  • PG&E says the planned outages allow final testing and repairs at the Mission substation, which was damaged in a Dec. 20 fire that cut power to roughly 130,000 customers.
  • The utility expects a return to normal operations to reduce recent brief outages and to permit removal of temporary generators, including units staged at 24th Avenue and Balboa.
  • Many residents and businesses say they are still awaiting responses to damage claims after PG&E earmarked $50 million for compensation, with some reporting thousands of dollars in losses and prior food spoilage.
